Search and Rescue

Search and Rescue dogs do a marvelous job but have you ever wondered what it takes to co-ordinate a search and rescue team?

We talk to Bob Farnham who is a call out co-ordinator for Search and Rescue Dog Association of South Wales about his role, as well as Liz Beaumont who has two trainee dogs, and Caroline Moreton who is a dog handler. Of course, the team spend a lot of time training, and they need practice "bodies" to search for so we also talk to Kate Gilliver about her very important role within the team.

The team are deployed in a wide variety of situations which they talk about here, and they and their dogs save lives on a regular basis.

To find out more about the team visit the SARDA website.

Pit Bull Nation

Cindy Marabito is the author of Pit Bull Nation which tells of her experiences rescuing Pit Bulls - and many other dogs too. The book is full of anecdotes illustrating some of the injustices going on in shelters as well as some of the wonderful people who fight for the dogs they care for; some of Cindy's stories are uplifting while some of them are downright shocking.

When Cindy started out volunteering in shelters she was by no means a Pit Bull fan, and it's fascinating hearing her talk about how she got to know the breed and to love them - although she pulls no punches about the true nature of the breed, which just might surprise you.

You can find out more about Cindy and her book at the Pit Bull Nation website and she is also on Facebook. Cindy is still fighting for Pit Bulls and other dogs to have the life they deserve.
