Buddy and Star make new friends

We went for a walk on Cannock Chase today, and Buddy and Star found some friends to play with. The child in the photo detected a child-friendly Lab and came straight over. From then on Buddy lay on his back to have his tummy rubbed by the child. All would have gone on peacefully, were it not for the presence of an enthusiastic German Shepherd Dog puppy and Star, because all of a sudden they both wanted in on the action. The child was happy to fuss all three, and Buddy was happy to lie on his back in the middle of it all!

I have a soft spot for GSDs as my Mom had one that was wonderful. He wasn't the best trained dog, but he had a heart of pure gold; he knew his place in the world, and was at peace with it. I also know though, that he was a determined character. Particularly early on, and that German Shepherds do need firm, consistent handling, and lots of socialisation. I chatted to the owner of the GSD pup, and was happy to learn that she had a great grasp of what her dog needed, and had previously raised two German Shepherds.

When her dog became a little bored that we were all just standing around chatting, she delved into her bag for a treat, and presented him with half a carrot, which he munched happily. She had been told to give him carrots as a treat to keep his weight down, and he certainly was a lovely shape. One of his favourite places seemed to be in the shelter of his "Mom's" legs, but he was more than happy to venture out to play with our dogs, and receive from us the adoration due such a cute puppy.

The Chase was more than usually full of dogs today, since the sunshine encouraged people to visit. We met a lovely chocolate Labrador who was content to let Buddy briefly join in his retrieving game. The chocolate Lab's playmate was a gorgeous little dog who could easily spring waist high, who was a Labrador terrier mix, and only six months old.

It was really good to see both our dogs showing the results of some extra training we have been doing with them They were both listening well, and eagerly running back to us when recalled. It'll probably be back to business as usual tomorrow, so I enjoyed it while it lasted. What's that saying about making hay while the sun shines?

Take care,
